Monetary Policy Update Jul 2025Australia’s Monetary Policy in Aug 2025 –

What is Monetary Policy?
Monetary policy is how a country’s central bank steers the economy. Think of it as the financial thermostat – used to heat things up when growth is slow, or cool things down when inflation runs hot.

It works mainly by tweaking interest rates and controlling the flow of money. Lower rates usually mean more borrowing, spending and investing. Higher rates slow down economic activity, curbing inflation and encouraging saving.

In Australia, the Reserve Bank (RBA) uses these levers to maintain stable prices and keep people employed.  They aim for that sweet spot where inflation sits between 2–3% and the economy grows at a steady pace.

RBA Cuts Interest Rate Again
The RBA has lowered the cash rate by 0.25% to 3.60%. This is the third cut this year, aiming to support the economy as inflation continues to slow and the job market softens slightly.

Inflation Is Coming Down
Prices are rising more slowly than before. In the June quarter, core inflation was 2.7%, and headline inflation was 2.1%. These numbers matched earlier forecasts. The RBA expects inflation to keep easing and settle in the middle of its 2–3% target range, helped by lower interest rates.

Headline Inflation = total price changes, including food and fuel
It is the overall rise in prices across all goods and services that households typically buy, including food and energy. It reflects the actual cost of living and is what most people experience on a day-to-day basis. But because food and fuel prices can swing wildly due to things like weather or global events, headline inflation can be quite volatile.

Core Inflation = a steadier measure, excludes food and fuel to show underlying trends
It strips out those more unpredictable items, mainly food and energy, to give a clearer picture of long-term price trends. It’s what central banks often focus on when setting interest rates, as it indicates whether inflation is truly rising or falling beneath the surface.

Global Uncertainty Still a Risk
The world economy is still unpredictable. There’s a bit more clarity around US trade policies, which helps, but global trade tensions are expected to slow growth. Australian households and businesses may hold off on spending until things feel more stable.

Signs of Recovery at Home
In Australia, people are starting to spend more and household incomes have improved. Financial conditions have eased a little. The job market is still tight, though not as much as before. Unemployment rose to 4.3% in June, which was expected. Wages are growing more slowly, but productivity hasn’t improved, so labour costs are still high.

Mixed Signals on Spending and Jobs
The RBA expects household spending to keep rising as incomes grow. But some businesses say weak demand makes it hard to raise prices. If spending is slower than expected, it could hurt overall growth and jobs. On the other hand, if people spend more and save less, the economy could grow faster than forecast.

Uncertainty About How Rate Cuts Will Work
It’s not clear how quickly recent rate cuts will affect the economy. The RBA is watching how businesses set prices and wages, and how the balance between demand and supply plays out, especially with weak productivity.

RBA Staying Focused on Stability and Jobs
The RBA believes this rate cut is the right move for now. But it’s staying cautious because the outlook is still uncertain. If global events affect Australia’s economy, the RBA is ready to act. It will keep a close eye on inflation, spending, jobs, and global trends to guide future decisions. Its main goal remains steady prices and full employment.
