The Future of Australian Iron Ore

Inflation Update May 2025The Future of Australian Iron Ore:  High-Grade or High Hopes? –

Still Shipping, Just Not Smiling
Australia’s still exporting iron ore at a record pace – Port Hedland saw 53 million tonnes leave in May 2025. But while volume is up, value is down. China, our best and most loyal customer, is cooling on the blast furnace binge. Prices are now limping along below US$94 per tonne. The market’s not dead. It’s just … sobering up.

Green Steel: The Industry’s Mid-Life Crisis (With Potential)
Steelmakers are trying to quit coal, replacing it with hydrogen and direct reduced iron (DRI) technology. This isn’t just some ESG-driven fever dream. It’s policy, capital and future-proofing, all in one shiny green ribbon.

But here’s the kicker: DRI only works well with premium-grade iron ore – the kind Australia hasn’t always prioritised.

Magnetite: From Boring Rock to Rock Queen
Enter magnetite – formerly the unloved cousin of hematite. It requires processing, yes, but it can sing 66–68% Fe with low impurities. Exactly what the green steelmakers ordered.

– Fortescue’s Iron Bridge is the big magnetite leap.

– Macarthur Minerals is betting the farm on this theme.

– And Mount Gibson, usually flying under the radar, suddenly looks more interesting:
  – Koolan Island: Naturally rich, up to 67% Fe. Legacy-suitable.
  – Extension Hill: Magnetite ground that could play the long green game – if they back it properly.

The Hematite Hangover
Meanwhile, miners built on lower-grade hematite (<60% Fe) may find themselves out of tune with the new orchestra unless they invest in beneficiation or get cosy with hydrogen tech. It’s adapt-or-be-diluted.

Adding Value: More Than Digging and Waving It Goodbye
Australia’s traditional model – dig, ship, repeat – could finally get a remix. If just 20% of our ore got dressed up into green steel, we’re talking tens of billions in extra export dollars. That’s not a rounding error. That’s a second budget surplus. Cue boardroom epiphanies.

Canberra’s Chequebook Says ‘Yes’
The government is showing up to this party:

– $18.1 million in green metal initiatives,
– Hydrogen hubs getting traction,
– Red tape sliced like a sashimi platter at a mining conference.

It’s not perfect, but it’s momentum.

Global Demand: The Ore Rush Reboots
Net-zero steel goals mean the world could need 350 million tonnes of new high-grade ore by 2050. That’s a call for action, not a memo for later.

The question is: who’s got the ore, and who’s got the nerve?
